The most efficient type of battery widely available today, in terms of overall charge/discharge (round-trip) efficiency for general use in electronics, electric vehicles, and home storage systems, is the lithium-ion battery. These batteries can achieve a high efficiency of 85-95%, meaning that most of the energy put into them during charging is successfully recovered when the battery is used. Different lithium-ion chemistries exist, such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC), which offer varying balances of high energy density (more power in a smaller size), safety, and lifespan, making them suitable for diverse applications. For utility-scale energy storage, pumped hydro storage systems are a traditional, highly efficient option, while emerging technologies like solid-state and sodium-ion batteries promise even greater efficiency and safety in the future.
